Inspiration & Context - The spark for The Showstopper was ignited during a lively and impassioned conversation with my musician friends Tony and Mike, founders of the Guitar Strap Company. It was while preparing their display of exquisitely crafted guitar straps for the 2019 NAMM music industry event that the concept struck like bolt of lightning. This electric moment called out for something bold, unforgettable, and unapologetically loud. That moment birthed the idea: a contemporary art piece that would literally stop the show.
From the start, my vision was clear to pay tribute to the raw, rebellious spirit of Rock 'n' Roll. I poured that energy into the design, weaving in gleaming 18k gold, fiery red rubies, sparkling diamonds, deep rich emeralds, and dazzling sapphires to echo the stars, guitars, and stage lights that define the genre’s soul. This piece had to scream Rock 'n' Roll, radiating the flamboyant flair of Nudie Cohn; the legendary tailor who stitched sparkle and swagger into the stage costumes of icons from Elvis and Elton to the Rolling Stones.
In Keith Richards' documentary Under the Influence, he reflects on Nudie and that unforgettable collision of blues and country, two powerful forces forged together to become Rock 'n' Roll. That alchemy, that moment in time, is what I set out to capture and crystallize in this piece. It’s not just contemporary art. It’s an anthem in gemstones.
