Inspiration & Context– I was inspired to create the Showstopper after an enthusiastic chat with musician friends Tony and Mike who own the Guitar Strap Company. Exhibiting their range of unique guitar straps at the 2019 NAMM music industry event provided a magic opportunity to create a feature piece of contemporary art that would literally become a showstopper. My concept for the piece was to pay homage to Rock n Roll so my design is infused with stars, guitars and spotlights represented with gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. I wanted this piece to absolutely scream Rock n Roll with a real Nudie Cohn feel; being the tailor who dressed all the stars from Elvis to Elton and the Rolling Stones with outrageous and colorful stage costumes. In the Kieth Richards documentary (Under The Influence) Richards makes comment on Nudie Cohn and the special moment in time when blues music and country music, were forged in a crucible to become Rock n Roll. This is what I set out to express within the art.
