Colin Burn

Conceptual artist Colin Burn is a self-confessed provocateur, he likes to incite conversation and challenge accepted traditions and values within society. He deeply observes and enjoys bringing focus to subject matters or items that are often taboo or not spoken of comfortably. His unique works have strong focus on symbolism and beautification, creating conceptual art using opulent materials that draw in the audience's attention. He often uses authentic value as the symbolism within sculptural allegories that house much deeper meanings. In this new world that’s become so busy that it’s difficult to be seen, his application of this opulent medium is a very big “hey you look over here” way of gaining attention to his art and its message.

Not frightened to challenge the norm, he is deeply inspired by artists like Duchamp, Hirst and Warhol, who completely transformed the the traditional art world. Hirst’s comment “if it’s in a gallery, it’s art” was truly inspirational for Burn when creating his opulent erotic, dildo sculptures as serious and valuable works of contemporary art. Burn enjoys the avant-gard, and is also a believer in original concepts stating “ I would rather cut a path and be hit with the branches, than to just follow in others’ footsteps”. This concept is forever on his mind when conceiving new ideas for his unique and original artworks. Crafting fine jewelry for over three decades and living the life of a genuine alchemist, his favorite mediums are the world’s finest diamonds, gems and precious metals. Over the years his creative jewelry works have received awards and recognition from the Australian and Japanese governments as well leading Australian sporting groups, helping him forge a successful career servicing a global audience of appreciative clients.

In 2004 Burn commenced an artistic journey crafting erotic jewelry pieces, capturing deeply emotive elements within these highly provocative works. During this period, he was spending a great deal of his time in Japan and South East Asia, which led to these works being influenced by his observation of diverse culture and human practice. Burn enjoys taking provocative objects to abstract and luxurious levels never before seen. He believes jewelry and art share a unique bond having meaningful and emotional impacts on people's lives, he states “while it could be argued that no one really needs jewelry or art, our emotions tell us otherwise.” Having experienced and enjoyed a comprehensive 35-year career across all areas of fine jewelry making, Burn is now solely focused on creating his unique and luxurious contemporary artworks which to date have been exhibited in Perth, Tokyo, and Los Angeles.
